Getting back to {a new} normal

This makes the second {or maybe third?} week in a row I’ve been able to take at least one naptime for me time. {happy dance}

I had honestly forgotten what it was like to sit with the windows open and read or write, enjoying a few minutes of quiet while all my wee ones napped snored and drooled. Three under three provided some new challenges for me, not to mention moving! With my first two being less than 14 months apart, it took me nearly 6 months to get any kind of routine down. I remember telling a friend when I went back to work, “I feel like I’m running backwards!” Working from home added to the chaos a bit too. There did finally come a day though, when I could get them out of the house in the morning, back home for naps, and cook a meal or two. Then I got pregnant again. 🙂 I tried to mentally prep myself this time, reminding myself how it took 6 months to find a new normal the first time. Then we found out we would be moving with a newborn! Moving with three small kids is no small feat.

This time though, I was pleasantly surprised when that day came, and I had the house mostly picked up by2:30, the kids were sleeping, and supper was cooking in the Crockpot, and my little SK was only three months old! Really, there’s something magical about our third baby. She’s laid back {Well, when she isn’t demanding someone hold her.} and happy-go-lucky. She balances out the craziness of her brothers and is a bit easier on mommy than they were/are. I like to think I’m getting a bit better at organization/time management with each kid, but that’s probably not true. Dang it.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are still two boxes in my kitchen that need to be unpacked, and one that needs to be put in storage, but for the most part we are finally done with that daunting task.

3 months of Being Sylvia-Kate

IMG_3730-2

Because we didn’t find out our baby’s gender during my pregnancy, we didn’t know who she was until she arrived. She was just Baby. Now she’s been Sylvia-Kate for three months!

How did that happen? She’s growing too fast!

IMG_3722-2

At her 2 month check up, she was already 25 inches long (above 97th percentile!), and I know she’s grown more in the last 4 weeks.
Now she’s rolling side to side and tummy to back, laughing a little, teething, “talking” up a storm, and smiley as ever! She loves to play with her toys and watch her silly brothers.

Catching up…

Well, I apologize for being gone for so long (again). Things have been crazy around here with the arrival of our newest zoo member!

On November 5, Miss Sylvia-Kate arrived into our home! She arrived with a hurricane (literally & figuratively) of drama. She is the sweetest little girl, and the entire family (even her brothers!!) loves her to bits! More on her later. She will get an entire post to herself. 🙂

But in the last week….

  • I discovered Lincoln naked and covered in gray/green eye shadow in my bathroom.
  • Stanton poured half  a container of formula in the floor…twice. Good thing that stuff is cheap! (not)
  • We put our Christmas tree up. Yay!
  • I killed the lights on the tree.
  • Steven fixed the lights – and instructed me to buy a new tree after Christmas.
  • We bought a new (to us) car.
  • My mommy brain has gone to a whole new level. (The level where you wear a bra inside out for an entire day without realizing it and you lay a sweater out on the patio to dry – and leave it there…to be rained on the next day.)
  • Stanton is still trying to potty train himself.
  • The boys emptied a 130+ box of diapers all over their room more times than I care to count.
  • The boys emptied the boxes of baby clothes stored in their closet more times than I care to count.
  • Sylvia-Kate rolled over (tummy to back) for the first time today! She’s only 4 weeks old.
  • I kissed 2,621* (sibling-inflicted) boo-boos.
  • I gave 3,322* hugs.
  • I slept 7* hours.
  • I threatened to put the kids in daycare only once. 🙂

35 weeks (#3)

How far along?35 weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 20 lbs.

Maternity clothes? Definitely

Stretch marks? This is my 3rd pregnancy. I prefer to not even pay attention to them.

Sleep: Decent. I’m pregnant and two toddlers crawl in my bed nearly every night; I don’t expect it to be fabulous.

Best moment this week: Lincoln told me several times, “Mommy, you’re the bestest ever!” and “Mommy, you’re my bestest friend!”

Movement: Does this kid ever not move?

Food cravings: Dr. Pepper (bad, bad, bad!)

Gender: don’t know

Labor Signs: Baby has dropped (Yay, I can breathe!), baby is head down, lots of Braxton Hicks contractions, and a few real contractions here and there.

Belly Button in or out? still in

What I miss: my husband

What I am looking forward to: Getting new flooring in my bedroom this weekend and taking the boys to Pumpkin Hollow!

Weekly Wisdom: No matter how desperate you get for food, do not give in to McDonald’s for breakfast. I felt yuck.

Baby’s Development:

Your baby doesn’t have much room to maneuver now that he’s over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (pick up a honeydew melon). Because it’s so snug in your womb, he isn’t likely to be doing somersaults anymore (Ha!) , but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete — he’ll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.” –babycenter.com

25 weeks (#3)

I have been horrible about posting these pictures and updates this pregnancy. 🙁 Thankfully we have been taking the pictures (and I manage to get them up on Facebook occasionally), but getting them put up on the blog hasn’t happened like I hoped it would. Apparently that’s what happens when you have 3 babies in 3 years! On another sad note, I realized this morning I put the shirt pictured above in the dryer, and I’m pretty sure it shrank…a lot. Pregnancy brain.

How far along? 25 weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 14 lbs.

Maternity clothes? Yes, but by some miracle, I can actually still wear my pre-pregnancy low-rise jeans! Woohoo!

Stretch marks? no new ones

Sleep: What’s that? I think I once heard that word, about 2 1/2 years ago. 🙂

Best moment this week: Taking the boys to see Super Why Live last night

Movement: Lots

Food cravings: watermelon

Gender: don’t know

Labor Signs: nope

Belly Button in or out? still in

What I miss: the lake

What I am looking forward to: Getting new flooring in and painting our bedroom and bathroom!

Weekly Wisdom: Don’t assume locking the door will keep your 2 year old out of the bathroom.

Baby’s Development:

Let your spouse put an ear to your belly — he might be able to pick up baby’s heartbeat (no stethoscope required). Inside the womb, the formation of tiny capillaries is giving baby a healthy pink glow. Baby’s also soaking up your antibodies, getting the immune system ready for life outside the womb. Eyes are forming, and baby will soon perfect the blink — perfect for batting those freshly grown lashes.” -thebump.com

“Head to heels, your baby now measures about 13 1/2 inches. Her weight — a pound and a half — isn’t much more than an average rutabaga, but she’s beginning to exchange her long, lean look for some baby fat. As she does, her wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and she’ll start to look more and more like a newborn. She’s also growing more hair — and if you could see it, you’d now be able to discern its color and texture.” -babycenter.com

My Little Handyman

Many mornings our adventures begin when the boys get a few moments free from mommy’s supervision while I take a bath. Yes, I know baths take a bit longer than showers, but I have to be able to listen to my rowdies and jump out at a moment’s notice when I hear the sound of one climbing over the baby gate, a fight breaking out, etc. The noise of the shower often drowns out the sounds of their antics. I learned that lesson the hard way.

This morning The boys had been up for a while, were settled with some cereal, and seemingly getting along, so I decided I would let them watch a cartoon while I took a quick shower instead of the usual bath. I turned on Clifford the Big Red Dog , went into the bathroom, locked the door, and hopped in the shower. Don’t worry, nothing got broken or poured out in the floor, and no one escaped from the house.

I took a quick shower, got dressed, and started to brush my teeth. I peeked out the door to check on the boys, and they were still playing in the living room and watching tv. I shut the door back and locked it, hoping to finish brushing my teeth before they got bored. I heard one of them twisting the locked doorknob. Then the lock clicked into the unlock position. The door opened, and there stood my 2 year-old, with this old screwdriver in his hand. “Hi, Mommy.”

Sigh. He is his father’s child.

Boy Mom Blog Hop

I’m thrilled to join lots of other moms of boys this week in the Boy Mom Blog Hop hosted by The MOB Society! I love reading about the adventures and tips from other moms of boys.

I’m Emily, the wife of a hard-working lineman and loving father, and stay-at-home mom to 2 energetic, fearless little boys (2 ½ years and 18 months). We are also anxiously awaiting the arrival of a third blessing (gender unknown) in early November.

Lincoln (at 5 months) and his awesome daddy

Me and my boys

I never imagined I would have boys, and with both of my previous pregnancies everyone around me was also certain I would have girls. While I’m not the frilliest or girliest, I sure didn’t think I was boy mom material. Thankfully, God knew better. I love everything about raising boys. My boys love sword fighting, playing pirates, bubble baths, “tents” made from quilts, helping Daddy work on his car, and all things farm-related, especially horses and tractors.

When I’m not taking care of my family or here blogging about my boys, God’s lessons in my life, and other fun stuff, I can be found behind the camera lens. I support my custom shirt and accessory habit for my boys as a professional, on-location photographer.

You can also follow me on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest!

Looking forward to meeting other moms of boys through the blog hop!

“Being patient is waiting happy.”

I have always considered myself to be a rather patient person. Slow traffic doesn’t bother me; i don’t get upset about waiting in line at the grocery store; it doesn’t bother me to be stuck behind a tractor on the highway. Waiting is something we all have to do, so why get upset about it? My 2 year-old on the other hand, doesn’t yet understand this concept, and it can make me a little crazy. When he wants a cup of juice, he wants me to drop what I’m doing (even if it’s making him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich) and get the juice. He stands next to the sink in the kitchen, asking me 20 times in 30 seconds for apple juice.  He only stops when he sees me getting a cup out of the cabinet and pulling the juice from the refrigerator. No matter how many times I say, “I’m working on it,” or “Yes, just give Mommy a second,” he doesn’t believe me until he sees me doing it.

Last Sunday the pastor of our church gave a sermon on Genesis 16 and 17. God made a promise to Abram, but after waiting a while, he decided he better work on it himself. From that came the birth of Ishmael. In Genesis 17 God reassured Abram that he had not forgotten his promise, but God didn’t need Abram’s assistance in fulfilling it. The covenant would be fulfilled through Isaac, the son of God’s plan, not Ishmael, the son of Abram’s plan. Until God laid it out in front of him, step by step, he didn’t believe him.

Much like my 2 year-old.

And myself.

You see, I may be patient with everyday inconveniences, but the big stuff? Well, I’m realizing lately that’s a different story. On and off, for years now, I have prayed a similar prayer over and over, and over. I cringe to think that over the last 2 years I have sounded like my own 2 year-old to God. It makes me so very thankful for 1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient…” I’m glad He can (and does) overlook my whining! He understands that while I hear Him saying, “I’ve got this. I said yes, now let me work on it,” just like Abram, and my son, I have a hard time believing it until I see the details laid out before me.

Now I have changed my prayer. There is no need for me to continue asking God for something He has promised me. Instead, I will thank God for His promise. I will pray that the details will all be worked out and that I will have the patience, wisdom, strength, and words to help my family deal with the waiting also.

This morning I decided to start Beth Moore’s Esther study again. I have done this study once before, but it has been on my mind for a week now, so I figured I better listen and go get it off the shelf. Sure enough, there in black and white, on page 14,”When we trust our lives to the hand and pen of an unseen but ever-present God, He will write our lives into His story and every last one of them will turn out to be a great read. With a grand ending. And not just in spite of those catastrophes. Often because of them.”

Patience isn’t just a matter of waiting. It’s remember God’s promises to us and waiting for His answer. His plans and timing are perfect, even if we can’t see all the details. Trust in Him. A good friend recently told me that she explains patience to her 3 year old daughter by saying, “Being patient is waiting happy.” I think that’s a good definition for a 3 year-old and a 25 year-old.

“Wait for the Lord; Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14

PS – As I was typing this my son finished his cup of milk and asked for a cup of juice. Twice. And took his diaper off. Twice. This is a lesson on patience in parenting too. 🙂

Maybe bathing is a bad idea….

Moms with toddlers really shouldn’t bathe.

For some dumb reason I thought I would go take a shower this morning while the boys were watching a movie. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I did my usual routine of locking the baby gate and hoping the boys would be entertained long enough for me to wash my hair and the oldest wouldn’t climb over the gate. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

For the past several days I have been wondering if I was getting careless and forgetting to lock the refrigerator or if our 2 year old had figured it out. Well, today I got my answer. It came in the form of 2+ pounds of sugar emptied and smeared across the floor in my kitchen and thrown (yes, thrown) over the gate, into the floor of the living room.

Let me state again that mothers of toddlers shouldn’t bathe.

Week 16, Baby #3

I can’t believe we are already at week 16. I have been taking the “weekly belly pics” since week 12, but alas, with 2 toddlers already running around, they haven’t made it to the blog. In fact, all of them aren’t even on Facebook yet. I did get the new carseat ordered last week though. I’m slowly checking off the to do list.

A few things have changed since my last post.
First we have decided to go “team green” and find out the sex of the baby at the birth. We’re pretty excited about it. Second, we have changed from seeing an OB/GYN to seeing a midwife for my prenatal care and will be having a homebirth. More on that later, but we are definitely looking forward to the experience. No picture for now, but I’ll be taking one this weekend.

How far along? 16 weeks

Total weight gain/loss: According to the midwife’s scale, I’m up 8 pounds. Pretty sure it was only because I went to see her right after eating a huge lunch though. Most days I’m doing good to see the scale up 3 pounds.

Maternity clothes? Some, but it’s not a necessity. I’m just tired of wearing my old clothes and wanted to wear my new stuff I bought last week. I am looking forward to wearing the rest of it later.

Stretch marks? no

Sleep: decent

Best moment this week: Coming home today and hearing that Lincoln used the potty (even #2!!) for the baby sitter all day with only one accident!

Movement: none that I can feel, but he/she sure was moving around to escape the doppler today at our appointment.

Food cravings: none

Gender: no idea

Labor Signs: nope

Belly Button in or out? still in

What I miss: having a life – Work has been crazy lately.

What I am looking forward to: Vacation next weekend!!

Weekly Wisdom: A pregnant woman should consume 80-100 grams of protein per day. That’s not easy.

Milestones: none
