Why yes, there is a goat in my kitchen!

Yep, that’s a goat standing in my kitchen. He’s a Pygmy goat to be exact. Friday afternoon we brought home the newest member of our zoo. Lincoln has been wanting a horse as long as he’s been alive, but for his second birthday we decided to start small. He has done surprisingly well with remembering to feed the dogs and reminding me to let them in or out, so we thought a goat would be a good addition to his entourage. So far, his name is “Goat.” Hopefully that will change this week.

Don’t worry, he lives outside. Lincoln’s daddy (my awesome hubby) just happens to be pretty handy with a hammer, and he built a spiffy goat house for our new friend. The next picture is Lincoln and his friend playing in the goat house before Daddy got the roof finished.

Our Zoo Date!

Last week Steven was lucky enough to get off work a couple of days early after working storm duty in Russellville. I picked him up in Batesville on Wednesday. On the way home he announced that he had already made plans for us for Thursday – a trip to the zoo! We hadn’t had a date in forever, so I was pretty darn excited.

We had planned to get up early on Thursday and leave the house by 8, so that we could hopefully get to Memphis, enjoy the zoo, and leave before the hottest part of the day. That didn’t happen.

But wait. Wasn’t it almost 100 degrees on Thursday?
Yes. Yes it was. I believe the high was actually 95. When we left the zoo and got in the car, we heard on the radio that the heat index was 107. That hadn’t stopped us though! We love the zoo.

I think our favorite exhibit was the new Birds & Bees exhibit. It is awesome! It’s pretty much a big, caged garden with LOTS of birds flying around. They let you get right up next to them. One of them even flew by Steven and hit his stomach with its wings! It’s a seasonal exhibit though – only there until Labor Day – so go see it!

We got sno cones too!

One of the red pandas was on the ground! They are usually 100 feet up in a tree and really hard to see. Isn’t he cute?

The polar bears are also a favorite of ours. We love to see the polar bear feeding. They were very playful that day.

The sea lion show was also fun. They had a good time showing off their tricks and talents.

Sleepy kitty 🙂

The elephants were feeling the heat, too. They were enjoying spraying themselves with water.

Yep, we love the zoo.

What’s one more?

Last night Steven decided to play around on the internet for a few minutes. When he “woke up” the computer, the window to my blog was on the screen. Normally, he just closes it and goes about his business. This time he didn’t though. He stared at my header, as if something was wrong with it. Then he said the words that I knew would come out of his mouth, “Aww, you don’t have Poncho on there.” He was very accusing, as if I intentionally left that poor, stray dog out of the family line up. Ok, maybe I did.

I admit it. I purposely left him off. I was hoping he might just decide he didn’t like our house and leave. Maybe Poncho and Biscuit wouldn’t get along? No chance of that, Biscuit wouldn’t care if we had 10 other dogs. But wait, what if someone came along and claimed him? Yes I know, everyone wants a skinny dog that is incredibly lazy and doesn’t know the meaning of ‘sit,’ ‘stay,’ or ‘down’.

You are probably thinking,”Who is Poncho?” or “Did they really get another animal?!”

Yes, we have expanded our family once again. Poncho is an awkward yellow lab/hound dog that appeared at our house almost two months ago. I really didn’t think he’d stick around, and I had no intention of allowing him to. My husband, however, insisted we feed him, “Until he leaves.” Yeah, Steven – he’s gonna just walk off after we feed him. Well, two months later he is still here. A few weeks ago Steven mentioned getting rid of him once he fattened up, but that plan collapsed too. He decided Biscuit needed a friend. Biscuit does seem to like him, and in all honesty, we’ve become a bit attached too.

Without further ado, meet Poncho!

Mooo!

Last night I went to the NEA District fair with my friend, Lindsay. (Thanks, Scotty for lending me your wife.) We had a blast! We looked at all the exhibits, the cows, and the animals in the petting zoo. Then we started on the rides. There weren’t any lines, so we just went from one spinning ride to the next until we thought we were almost sick! We took a break, played a couple of games – then did it again! We ended the night by riding the carousel and getting some awesome lemonade. Here are some pictures from the petting zoo.

And my favorite, the Scottish Highland Cattle…
